What is the
Inner Circle?

The Inner Circle is the collective bodies and consciousness of all who have experienced Random Reality as presented in the game Morton's List: The End to Boredom.
It serves the cause of the Random Reality Revolution by connecting players
and encouraging the uninitiated to let chance into their lives. Currently, there are estimated to be over 50,000 active members of the Inner Circle, worldwide.

SUMMER COLLECTION

Good things come in waves. The summer Morton's List merch collection wave is about to crash, and ground zero is The Karmic Gathering: Within. We won't let all the bats out of the cave, but get ready for Degree Stickers (think Masonic car stickers), all new bags, and official occult paraphernalia! Get first dibs at Within before it hits the Morton's List web store
.

Corrections
In the pursuit of accuracy, especially when giving people their proper credit is concerned, it should be noted that last month's Pic of the Month was actually taken by Pyroteeze from Daytona Beach, FL
and her crew of Florida ninjas. Also, you'll have to wait another month for the next installment of The BookBinder, and two months for part two of Chance is My God. OddBall and Twilight Lord Nathaninja are freaking it very hard right now in service to Karma, and promise more flavor to come soon!

Welcome to The Radius

Members of the Inner Circle, Souls of Fate, Spirits of Luck, and the Living Fluids of Karma,

The Thirteenth day of the Third Month is here. It lies at the precipice of 30 and one days from this very time. Then, the ebbs and flows of April 13th's worldwide confluence of Karma shall summon the Twilight Lords to cast the necessary spells to erect The Center.

It will be the Center of a Karmic Gathering that will be outside of time, one that opens life's gateway to the full possibilities of all things at all times within the entirety of everything Morton's List is. The Summer of 2007 is growing. Inner Circle events are happening at various sized convention centers during various conventions - the perfect play space for legendarily entertaining Quests.

When you come to Tennessee for the Karmic Gathering, your ticket opens two days of enjoying the full possibilities and entertainment of Karma, Fate and Chance. Two days of food and the tactics and company of those who play Morton's List. If two days is more than you can handle, then come for only one. Ceremonies, feasts, and Karmic change in your life await.

Details and flavor abound in this volume of The Radius, as well as a new layout. New events are materializing constantly, as reality is encircled with those guided by the die.

The Inner Circle is Limitless,

The Karmic Order of Twilight Lords

Drama vs. Karma: Karmic Rights and Responsibilities
2007 by Twilight Lord Nathaninja

Every Inner Circle member has heard the word "Karma." Probably countless times. We at Center use it very liberally, because, well, we love Karma and the more the better. But what really are we talking about when we talk about Karma? And how is our use of Karma different from the ancient Eastern concept of karma? Why is it so important to Morton's List, when it's barely mentioned in the game?

To begin, let's take a quick look at the traditional meaning of karma. Like many highly complex mystical concepts it comes from Sanskrit, meaning "action" or "deed." From Wikipedia:

Karma is a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. The results or "fruits" of actions are called karma-phala. Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward, karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others....

An individual who is constantly in the turiya [pure consciousness] state is said to have attained moksha [liberation] where their actions happen as a response to events (and not because of thought process); such actions do not result in accumulation of karma as they have no karmic effect.

Karma is therefore seen as something to avoid - a byproduct of not knowing who you truly are (an nlightened being, one with God). The more karma you accumulate the harder it is to break free of the cycle of birth-death-rebirth, called samsara. The only release from karma and samsara is to expand your consciousness until reaching enlightenment. Difficult, maybe, but not as rare as most people believe.

The philosophy behind Morton's List is in substantial agreement with these ancient teachings. However, we use the term Karma (capitalized) to refer instead to excitement, openness, freedom, hope and friendship. All feelings that flow when playing Morton's List. An even better understanding of Karma is think of it as being on the path of personal evolution, the process of expanding consciousness (one Quest at a time!) and not becoming fixated or distracted - stuck in a rut.

When you are in touch with that wide open excitement often seen in children, when you know anything is possible, when you are living in the moment and realizing that you are so much more than you ever imagined - that's Karma. It's a little like being in love, but like being in love it's something you absolutely cannot describe. It MUST be experienced to be understood.

An easy way to think of Karma is to compare it to the ancient Greek versions of Hell and Heaven: Hades and the Elysian Fields. In Hades you have a task, such as pushing a heavy stone up a hill or filling a jug with water. Right before you complete your task the rock slips and you have to start all over. Or the jug is full of holes and all the water you put in spills out just as fast. Pointless, monotonous, frustrated endless labor. Perhaps you've had a job or two that fit this description.

In the Elysian Fields on the other hand, you wake up every day as if it was your first day there. Everything is bright, new and delightfully surprising. Why? Because otherwise no matter how fun it was it would get played out after a few centuries. This way it's like living the best day of your life forever.

These mythological places are simply metaphors for our daily lives. They are not places you can go (even after death, regardless if you are a devout ancient Greek), they are states of being you can experience right here, right now. If you are blocked from expanding your personal consciousness and thus not evolving as a person, your life will become more and more gloomy and pointless, like Hades. If, however, you stay on the path towards higher consciousness, always expanding your sense of self to encompass all life and eventually the entire Kosmos, then you are living Karma.

So where's the drama? If you're tapped into Karma, there is no drama, no fear, no limitations, no depression, no self defeatism. Karma is in every way the opposite of those traps that restrict you from expanding your understanding of who you really are. The next time you feel yourself being pulled in by some drama or held back by a fear, think about that. Would the REAL you be restricted by these things?

The Inner Circle is defined by Karma, more so than Morton's List or even Random Reality. Karma is the foundation beneath it all, the very air we breathe. To help others understand what all this flowery talk means, Center is compiling the list of Karmic Rights and Responsibilities. This will be an on-going and organic work, ever seeking to better understand the guiding principles of Karma as it applies to the real people in the Inner Circle.

That's why we are inviting YOU to tell us what Rights and Responsibilities you think should be included. We will carefully consider everyone's opinion. Email your ideas, experiences, reasons and thoughts to Center any time. Imagine you are in charge of your own country. What rights should the people have? What responsibilities should they be held to? We will publish a working model soon. Until then, Karma Always.

Ninjas: They be Pow'ful

2006 by Myst Hunter

This Inner Circle clearly knows the true spirit of ninpo. Real ninja never wore all black - that comes from Japanese Noh theater, where set movers wore all black so as to not visually interfere with the play, and essentially go unseen or invisible. No, real ninja blend in with their surroundings, becoming peasants, samurai, or in this case straight up freaks!

Democracy in Action

The Inner Circle has voted, and the Stories section is back! Thanks to all those who submitted. The Stories section will be run so long as there are stories to share. Keep on submitting and letting others know how you roll!

Taking One for the Clan
2007 by David, the One and Only

(The events of this true story took place during the Night of the Ultimate Ninja Morton's List Midnight Event, Saturday, July 15th at The Gathering of the Juggalos 2007, Pataskala, OH)

With the Boulder rolled, we had our mission: find the "coolest" locations, go there, make it back, and prove it. Hardly knowing each other or what we were about to do, our clan of no more than six headed over to the back of the basketball bleachers for discussion. Right away we knew what we had to do, and that was get backstage - it'd be hard to top that.

We bolted for the main stage, all of us in line, and followed the fence. When we hit the VIP entrance one group was to distract security while the other jumped over the front crowd barriers. We were pumped because another clan of ninja was running beside us along the opposite side of the fence. The plan quickly evolved as we got closer. Security freaked, seeing a line of ninja coming at them. We ditched the fence plan and dispersed across the grass/mud/manure field in front of the stage. A fence was spotted running alongside the stage hidden by some brush and trees which we used for cover. I instructed the clan over the fence as I did so myself.

My pants were stuck to the fence but I tore myself free dropping to the ground. I was now backstage. Crazy how fast it happened, but now how to prove it? I crawled underneath the backstage trailers to scope out security nearby; just a guy or two. I went up to two trailers, knocking on the windows/doors… nothing. Then I saw it, a box near a trailer door. Inside were all the forms contestants fill out to participate on stage. Bingo! I threw it over the fence and also myself, cutting open my hand an inch and a half as I did so.

The rest of the clan was awaiting and psyched to see the goods. But we really had to rock it. With a half hour still to go and other clans competing we came up with another plan. Operation: Bomb House - infiltrate the stage and nab a vinyl from the DJ's crate. No one taking initiative, I'd be the one on stage. I'd take the vinyl, come through back of the tent, make the pass to another ninja, and we'd all run.

We got behind the tent and ducked low. I parted the back of the tent's opening and slid under the framework of the stage. If I peeked up I could see the DJ and some girls dancing onstage. I waited for the DJ to move away from the crate and spin something up. I acted fast, pulled myself up on stage, ran to the crate, and started to pull an album out, at which point they saw me;: the DJ, the girls, and oh yes, the crowd. Completely stunned, paralyzed with disbelief, everyone asking, "Hold up, did I really just see a Ninja do that?" I jumped out the back, ready to hand over the record, but instead got one to the face. Confused and being hit repeatedly I threw the album wildly into the air and asked the person to stop. When he started calling for backup I freed myself and sped off.

My clan informed me that they were removed from the back of the tent by the guy attacking me. He told them to leave and waited for me. Later I came back disguised, looking for the record, only to find cops searching the area. Heading back to the basketball courts we met back up with the rest of the Inner Circle and shared our journeys. Though we did not "win" we were bestowed with the prize of our memory. Another page of flavor added to the archives of our mind, ready to rewind and play again.

2007 Morton's List Tour de Chance

The 2007 Morton's List Tour de Chance is poised to blow some wigs back. The first event, Marmalade Dog 12, will occur between this issue of The Radius and the next. And the Karmic Gathering : Within happens exactly one month from today! All such immanent events will be showcased in the new Spotlight section.

Thanks to all those who have submitted or are working on events to become Tour de Chance dates. We are excited to announce another new date, the lively Comfest in Columbus, Ohio, June 22-24 submitted by The Loyal Henchman of the Twilight Lords.

The invitation to submit events for the Tour de Chance is still open. Here again is how it works.

There are four CLASSES of Morton's List events:

  • KARMIC GATHERING - the pinnacle of all Morton's List events, and specially designated by the Karmic Order of Twilight Lords
  • OFFICIAL - put on by Center and/or featuring an appearance by one or more Twilight Lords
  • SANCTIONED - put on by an Inner Circle or individual member, not involving a Twilight Lord, but promoted by Center
  • RANDOM - put on by an Inner Circle or individual member, not involving a Twilight Lord, and not promoted by Center
Additionally there are two main TYPES of events:
  • TOURNAMENT - officially recognized by Center as complying with Morton's List tournament play rules and involving official prizes
  • CHAOTIC - not officially recognized by Center as complying with Morton's List tournament play rules and not involving official prizes

Each event will be one of the four Classes and up to one of the two Types. Here is a list of all possible combinations:

  • KARMIC GATHERING TOURNAMENT

  • KARMIC GATHERING CHAOTIC

  • OFFICIAL TOURNAMNET

  • OFFICIAL CHAOTIC

  • SANCTIONED TOURNAMENT

  • SANCTIONED CHAOTIC

  • RANDOM TOURNAMENT

  • RANDOM CHAOTIC
Center encourages all varieties of events, but in order to become part of the Tour de Chance it must become at least a Sanctioned Class event. Its Type may be either Tournament or Chaotic. Send all event submissions and further questions to MortonsWeb@gmail.com.

In preparation for the overhaul of MortonsList.com, all Tour de Chance events are listed on MySpace/mortons_list.

A quick word about volunteering. Center wants YOU to volunteer! Not because it makes our lives easier, though it helps. But because together we can accomplish so much more. It's amazing what a difference just one volunteer at an event can make. We do what we do for the love of Karma. It's all non-profit. So come work along side us, and help us spread Karma to those who have not been touched by Morton. If you live near Western Michigan, Southeastern Michigan, Eastern Tennessee, Mid-Ohio, Mid-Indiana or Northern Nevada talk to us. This is your chance to up your game and make the crucial leap from entertained to entertainer. Email Center today.

And now for the updates:

Spotlight
Spotlighted events are happing SOON. That means before the next issue of The Radius, where they will become part of the What Went Down section. So if you're going to attend or volunteer, NOW is the time to make it happen. You must make the choice. At this point, putting it off is the same as choosing no.

Marmalade Dog 12

Marmalade Dog kicks it all off. Center has developed a new and bold full coverage convention format: 12 weekend-long two-hour Morton's List Quests with automatic Mutations, each starting on a different Table! Every game of Morton's List is always different, of course, but with this approach, each Quest is given a different flavor, while showcasing the 12 most commonly encountered Tables. Empryme, long time Inner Circle member and Morton's List supporter is heavily involved with Marmalade Dog and will be running his own four hour traditional Quest event Friday (see below).

Thanks to all the volunteers who have already signed up to help! OverBill, Cricket and Nazi Nigga of the Ferndale, MI based Empire of Nothing Inner Circle have graciously agreed to lend their substantial Karma, as has The Loyal Henchman of the Twilight Lords, coming in from Columbus, OH. Forget everything else, this crew alone is reason enough to come - the party's on!

The 13th Center-run Morton's List event at Marmalade Dog is The 987th Ninja Clan Showdown. We are honored to have been given the rights to hold this important ninja event, for the first time in the U.S.! Attendees will be granted temporary Clan status, entitling them to a color-coded headband, name badge, and info. sheet on their Clan. These "pledges" will then compete against those of the other Clans to determine which Clan will reign supreme until the next Showdown!

If you're new to Morton's List or maybe haven't ever played, don't be intimidated. High level, long time deep-in-the-game veterans love nothing more than new players, known as Fresh Karma. You will be welcomed and feel right at home in an instant. Here is the complete Order of Events to give you a peek of the flavor in store:

Friday the 13th of April

Unlocking the Karma
12 noon/1200 - 1 hour

Registration in open! Come early to allow enough time for all Inner Circle members. If you have brought gifts and/or a dish to share, you will be asked to describe them here. Before entering Center you must first pass through the Karma Lock. In the Karma Lock you will be asked an important question to which you must respond correctly and Karmically. If this is your first Karmic Gathering, you will officially and permanently become part of Morton's List. You will then be admitted to Center where you are encouraged to relax, introduce yourself to fellow Inner Circle members, and prepare for the Karma of the event to come. Latecomers will be admitted quietly, but may not participate in any Quest that has already begun.

Releasing the Karma (Ritual)
1pm/1300 - 1 hour

Twilight Lords, representing Center, and Twilight Circle members, representing the host Inner Circle, welcome you to the event and lead everyone in the ceremony of Karmic Attunement. Have your low-Karma items ready for ritual destruction. Powering up Karmic items, and the Morton Boulder with Karma

Your First Quest (Quest)
2pm/1400 - 2 hours

This Quest celebrates the joy of new experiences. Its ceremonial Karmic Gathering honors new players who are experiencing their first Quest, while reminding those who think they've seen it all to remain open to the unexpected.

'Lucky Dim Sum (Food)
4pm/1600 - 1 hour

We will all share a Karmic meal, pot luck / dim sum style. Your hosts will provide a Chinese food foundation and everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share. Although Asian foods are most fitting, and the more Karmic and exotic the better, bring what you can or nothing at all if you are unable. The more dishes brought, the more everyone can share and the more luck and Karma will flow. There is no refrigeration on site. Please, no mayonnaise. You will be asked to name and describe your dish at registration where it will be determined which special diets it is appropriate for. If you have brought gifts to bestow upon each Inner Circle member these will be shared now.

The Yin and the Yang (Quest)
5pm/1700 - 2 hours

The fundamental Chinese concepts of Yin and Yang and the Wu Chi from which they come form the very basis of Morton's List. This Quest's Karmic Gathering will harness these primary forces to bring greater wisdom and Karma to all.

Giving the Karma (Event)
7pm/1900 - 1 hour
Exchanging gifts is an ancient tradition and the mortar of friendship. When done Morton's List style, the Karma unleashed is even greater. Although participation is optional, each Inner Circle member is encouraged to bring one Karmically significant gift. It need not be expensive, and indeed considerations of cost miss the point entirely. Rather than being a commercial product, the ideal Karmic gift is hand made, or already exists. Examples include a necklace or charm worn by the giver, a special rock with a story about how it was found, a home brewed potion, a poem or other artistic expression of the giver, etc. Sometimes the smallest, simplest gifts, contain the most Karma. But don't be limited by preconceptions. Each gift should be unique and come from the mind, imagination and life of the giver, be it tiny, new, obscure, handmade or store bought. During this event all those who brought a gift will receive a gift, randomly. This way, Inner Circle members will posses physical representations of another member's Karma.

Prepare to Be Schooled (Travel/Food)
8pm/2000 - 1 hour
Everyone will relocate a few miles by car for the final Quest of the evening. On the way you are encouraged to grab a quick bite to eat and otherwise prepare for whatever is to come.

Friday the 13th - for Real
(Quest) 9pm/2100 - 2 hours

Away from Center, everyone will invoke the Karma and flavor of Friday the 13th with a Karmic Gathering that pays tribute to horror flick legend Jason Voorhees . A special Friday the 13th Table will reveal the Quest.

The List of Life Scavenger Hunt (Event)
11pm/2300 - 1 hour

Back at Center everyone will be given handouts listing the items they must obtain. It could be a matter of life and death....

The 13th Hour

The 13th Hour begins at midnight and lasts until noon the next day. It is a time of pseudo-quasi-(un)official events, programming and most of all partying. You are encouraged to host and attend parties, sances, Quests, and any manner of late night entertainment. What makes the 13th hour different than just a bunch of random partying? The Karmic spirit. This is the time to get to know people you met during the day better. The time to put into practice the spirit of friendship, non-drama, sharing and random fun that defines and powers the Inner Circle.

The 13th Breakfast (Food)
6:00am to 9:30am/0600 to 0900 - 2 1/2 hours

Come delight in the joys of free food in the form of the hotel's continental breakfast. If you haven't met all the Inner Circle members yet, catch up over breakfast.

Saturday the 14th of April

Continuing the Karma
12 noon/1200 - 1 hour
If you attended Friday your name badge is your pass to entering Center. If you are just arriving, Registration in open!

The Crystal List (Quest)
1pm/1300 - 2 hours

On Friday the 13th we journeyed into the dark, literally. Because Morton's List is perfectly balanced, it is now time to travel the path of light and goodness. We will roll on The Crystal List, a Table in every way the opposite of The Dark List, premiered at The Karmic Gathering: OctoberList. The Karmic Gathering will rejoin the Inner Circle and honor new arrivals.

The Path of Many Paths (Events)

Your hosts will close the event by leading everyone in a final group ritual followed by important announcements of the most Karmic nature.

Now get a load of this. How would you like to be a part of The Karmic Gathering: Within? More than attending, we mean. Aside from volunteering, which you can always assume is an option, you have the opportunity of running your own Path of Many Paths event! Just email us to discuss the options further. Some of the many possible types of event are:

Seminar - A person or people talk about something in front of a group, possibly holding Q & A afterwards.
Example: The Seattle-based Karma Crows Inner Circle wants to start up a monthly online Quest. A few keys members hold a seminar to explain what their organization is all about, talk about how the Quests will be run, recruit new members, and inspire others to spread the word.

Quest - A Morton's List Quest. This could be standard, 360, themed, several mini-Quests, auto-mutation, rolled on a special Table, picked from a special Quest pool, etc.
Example: Cryptic from Omaha has a personal Table he made after rolling Tables are Turned. Having spent much time on it, he is excited to share it with people outside his Inner Circle.

Game - Any kind of non-Morton's List game. It should be something to do with Random Reality, making connections, or self-discovery, etc. such as a Dice Man style game.
Example: The Acolytes, an Inner Circle out of southern North Carolina, love games you are always playing, like Circle of Assassins. They come up with a game Karmic Gathering attendees can play all weekend long and kick start it with a half hour event.

Networking - Direction socialization focusing on meeting people, discussing common interests, exchanging contact info., making new friends, etc.
Example: Eager to promote his Inner Circle back home in Albuquerque, Ninjer Rex throws a small party where everyone meets everyone, and everyone finds out about the Albuquerque Random Reality scene.

Panel Discussion - Like a seminar but several people discuss a topic, usually responding to a questioner (panel member), and involving Q & A during and/or afterwards.
Example: The Sons of Morton, based in Salt Lake City play the List really differently. They hold a panel to discuss how they roll, and inspire others to expand their games.

Ritual - Any manner of Morton's List related or inspired ceremony or ritual done with the goal of increasing participants' Karma.
Example: A Mobile, AL based Inner Circle has really gotten into some serious shit. Their Karmic Gatherings prior to rolling are very involved, and they feel this enhances their Quest experience. They decide to bring others into their rituals by holding a special one at The Karmic Gathering.

Open Discussion - Like a panel discussion without the panel; usually paced by a moderator
Example: An Inner Circle member from Minneapolis, MN wants to really dig into the issues, and discuss a few important topics with others, including the pros and cons of using 360 and the role of women in Random Reality.

Stories - Sharing of stories be they Quests, Morton's List or Random Reality related, or important life experiences.
Example: A high level long time Lister from Chico, CA has stories for years and the will to entertain. He holds a Brushes with Fate themed story event and invites others to share their own unexplainable experiences.

Workshop - Attendees create or modify something, be it art, writing, etc.
Example: Lily X from Cleveland, OH is into altered books, where you take a book and turn it into art. She runs a workshop where people can bring copies of Morton's List and mutilate them into something beautiful.

Events that are less participatory (seminars, panel and open discussions, stories, etc.) should be 1/2 hour. Fully participatory events (Quests, games, networking, rituals, workshops, etc.) can be up to an hour.

All of your ideas will be given full consideration. If you have an idea that breaks the above mold, not worry about it. These are just guidelines to help you get started thinking. As for topic and content, pick something you have heart and Karma for that you think others would be interested in and benefit from.

Beyond the events, the food, the gifts, there is something more important that all that put together. And that is the spirit of Karma, which is the real source of all the excitement, fun, and adventure. Without that a Karmic Gathering would be very much like a normal convention or club meeting. It's the people, the Inner Circle, YOU who make this event something special and rare, something as necessary as it is entertaining, something truly real in a world of surfaces and shadows. Come and bring your Karma.

Origins International Games Expo 2007 - update

Another jam packed weekend of 13 Morton's List events: 12 Theme Quests and the 989th Ninja Clan Showdown (see Marmalade Dog 12 above) - times available any day now. Come meet The Loyal Henchman of the Twilight Lords, who has agreed to spearhead this even, and partake in this massive 10,000+ person convention.

SPECIAL NOTICE:
The Karmic Order of Twilight Lords has received a summons from a venerable clan leader to journey to Japan, and there attend several ninja clan meetings and events. Twilight Lords Jumpsteady, Nathaninja and R. Jesse are all extremely honored, and are making preparations for representing the Order in Japan. We mention this here, because the summons' timing conflicts with Origins. Thus the need to volunteers is critical. If you live near Columbus, Ohio or are willing to drive (or fly) in for a day or the weekend, contact Center right away. The Loyal Henchman of the Twilight Lords needs your assistance.

More Events

With so many Morton's List Tour de Chance dates make sure not to overlook the many non-Tour events hosted by Inner Circle members all over.

Horde Online Quest (HOQ) #3

They're at it again! The Horde is drunk with success and there's no stopping the Karma! Ouija of The Horde will be your coordinator as you play Morton's List with others around the country and world. One of the most common problems we hear about in the Inner Circle is not having anyone (or anyone cool or open minded enough) to play Morton's List with. With HOQ, that's all over with. You now have access to the coolest Listers currently living. Sure it's a different way to play, but give it a try - we think you'll see that the spirit of Karma is not blocked by a few computers and miles.

See What Went Down for what happened at HOQ #2).
